I’m always fascinated by the idea of learning. I’m not only referring to the stuff learned at school, but learning in general. I am so conscious about the process of learning that for me, learning is an experience itself. It’s pretty amazing that at one time you don’t have a clue about something, and next thing you know, in like 10 years, you’re already an expert. Only the most annoying person, can claim to achieve this “basic to expert” transition feat in about 10mins or less, depending on the number of people to annoy.
As a programmer by trade, it is important for me to learn new things. And in the wave of the Web, there’s always a new way to do something everyday. So to keep me updated, so I say to my boss, I read a lot of porn blogs and articles of interesting people and take a piece or two of their ideas. But based on experience, I can only learn the thing if I need it urgently, or in other words deadline nearing.
Say for example, the very first time I really learned how to code for web is that when I have this commissioned web project for a sports house store (I will not divulge the name of the store) and all I know are few HTML tags which includes my favorite <marquee> tag. So in a small amount of time I learned JavaScript and the concept of basic e-commerce or else we have to payback the client’s down payment i already used to upgrade my PC. So learning is accelerated when there is urgency, or when your ass is on the line and for me it is the best way to learn something. Reading something and understanding it but not experiencing it immediately is not learning.
There was this Discovery Feature about the brain and talked about its complexity and its flexibility. It’s pretty amazing that a soft piece of muscle is much more powerful than anything man has ever created. No, it’s not the penis. We may already have the technology to produce multiterabyte disks and make it available in the market, but the brain can store trillions of trillions of gazillions of data (unless you have Alzheimer’s) that can be retrieved, processed and evaluated faster than you can say medulla oblangata. We can store lots of different types of data in our brain, be it photos, conversations, moments or tragedies. And the really amazing part is that it stores the data based on the relevance of it to our lives and all its associations. So, the more important the experience to us, the faster the brain can retrieve it. That’s why it’s so easy remember conflicts in these fictional telenovelas than the conflicts in our own real-life government bec..hold that. Bad example.

Which brings me to the question, can we deliberately forget something to keep us from remembering it? Can we reverse learning? If we can learn how to unlearn, how can we learn about it? Can we force amnesia? Is this mug going to hurt? Will I crack my monitor? Is Lebron James going to win his first ever MVP this year and get his first NBA ring? (not related question).
Michael Gondry’s ridiculously long titled movie, Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind of The Curious Case of Benjamin Button: The Order of the Phoenix, which also a ridiculously long movie, tackled this issue. I don’t want to spoil the ending because I think you have to endure the movie yourself! But basically Gondry’s movie tried to learn how to unlearn things which basically turned Jim Carrey into the Grinch by stealing Kate Winslet’s hairdo.
Anyway, it is really amazing how the brain works. The way it stores the data and connects it to the associated and relevant memories and experiences. And the power it has to make you remember things that makes “deliberately trying to forget” such a paradoxical statement.
We don’t need to forget anything. All our memories and experiences, be it good or bad, happy or tragic, aren’t just mere irrelevant data. It is the stuff that builds our personality. It is who we are. Every hurt and mistakes adds something that makes us different than before and still be the same person. Yes the pain is sometimes unbearable, but it drives us to be better and be happier the next time around. It’s a cycle.
Life is an amazing learning process.
I know i’m not really making a point here. Too sleepy to make one. So i need to stop. Maybe I need to learn how to write properly.
